Chat model.
Also known as: chatbot, LLM chat
A chat model is the ask-a-question-get-an-answer way of using AI. ChatGPT, Claude chat, that's what most people mean when they say AI. You type something, it answers, and you're back in the driver's seat to go do the work.
The cleanest way to think about it: a chat model is a really smart consultant. Brilliant advice on tap, but you still have to go and do the work yourself. That's the difference between a chat model and an AI agent. The consultant tells you what to do; the agent goes and does it.
None of this makes chat models worse. For a quick answer, a second opinion, or thinking something through, it's what you want. It's worth knowing which one you're using, because the moment you want the work done and not just advised on, you've outgrown the chat model.
