Plan mode — The AI Glossary

Plan mode.

all levels Features

Also known as: native plan mode

Plan mode stops the AI agent from touching any files so it can only talk through the work first. No writing, no building, just planning out loud with you.

Use it before anything that isn't trivial. You say what you want, Claude lays out the approach, and you go back and forth until the plan is right. Remy's take: "planning is like 90% of the work. Once you're happy, you just click go," and it builds.

This earns its keep when you're shipping. Fixing a bad plan costs a sentence. Unwinding a pile of files the agent already wrote off a half-baked idea costs an afternoon. You catch wrong assumptions while they're still words on a screen. Remy's default is Claude's native plan mode, ship a V1, then iterate from there instead of chasing a perfect first try.
